Career Life Plan

What Is a Career Life Plan?
This can be a difficult question, and requires careful thought. First, a career is a vocation. It is a lifetime endeavor for the purpose of growth and self-support. Your career, if well chosen, will follow you throughout your life and help to augment your understanding of the world and all of your experiences in life.
A Career Is Much More Than A Job
You may have many jobs during your career life. In thinking about what you would like to do next, it is important to think about what career area interest you. Each career interest will more than likely offer you many different job opportunities. For instance, if you choose to work in education, your career may span many jobs, such as teacher, education planner, counselor or school principal.
What Kind Of Life Do You Want To Lead?
We live and we learn on a continuum. It is very difficult to divorce your career planning from the life you want to lead, because the two are completely interrelated. In thinking about what you would like to do next, it is important to think about what career area interests you as a person. A well-chosen career takes everything into account. Will you work during the day or night? How much will be your earning potential? How much flexibility will you have? A good career takes into account:
  • Work schedule
  • Job flexibility
  • Compensation
  • Location
  • Personal compatibility
…and many other considerations. Most importantly, the best career choice doesn't just include a few of these considerations, but all of them together.
A Vision For The Future
Each of us is connected as a birthright and without any effort on our part to the life forces which flow through the world. Each of us has a connection to culture, to love, to energy, and to greatness. Regardless of the multitude of obstacles imposed by our circumstances, we can each prepare our selves, in our own time, to have a profound impact on our own life, on our families, on our community, and on the world.
To build our connection to the positive universal forces, each of us must develop a vision for our life and for our future. Our vision does not lie outside of ourselves, but is already planted as a seed within us, waiting to blossom. In that vision is our passion, our courage, our hope and our opportunity for self-expression and fulfillment.
Listening To Yourself
You may have heard the phrase "follow your heart, not your head". Yet, when you listen to your "heart," which is a way of describing the perspective of your inner person, your "head" may contradict your inner desires. The perspective in your "head" - your practical, logical side - will try to show you why your vision is impractical, won't work, and so forth. Yet, if you follow your "head", which many people do, you may spend many years regretting your choices, and hoping for an opportunity to "follow your heart".
The danger of allowing logic to rule over feelings is that logic is rooted in past experience. While our heart tugs us forward toward our vision, our head pulls us back to the reality of our current situation and our past experiences and limitations. Our head fashions these experiences into truths, and beliefs about ourselves, which limit our opportunities and anchor us in our current situation. Many people become so bound by their past, that they simply give up their vision. To hold on to our vision, we need to let go of limiting beliefs about ourselves and move forward.
Following Your Head and Your Heart
To feel and be whole, you must take advantage of both your "heart" and your "head". EUREKA can help you do that. We know that it's important to be both practical and idealistic when engaging in career planning, and our resources and services can help you to find what's in your "heart" and make it work with what's in your "head."
Career planning is a lifelong process. As you work and grow, your plans will change and evolve, and EUREKA will be there to help you.
